Are you deciding to study architecture in college? Many questions counselors ask: Are you good at math? Do you like to design? Do you like Legos? Do you like building projects? Just to set the record straight the hardest level of math and science that needs to be completed is Trigonometry and Physics 1. The real questions counselors should be asking are: Do you like drawing floor plans? Do you like sketching? Do you like solving puzzles? There are going to be many days where you will be drawing floor plans on computer programs. I am personally not the best at sketching, but I am learning to get better to express my ideas quickly. A building is going to have constant problems that designer need to solve in a day. The most important thing about this major is that you are willing to put in the work, and you are passionate about becoming an architect, interior design, or any other profession in the industry.

A common sacrifice many architect students make is their free time - More than most majors, architecture can be pretty involved and time-intensive. This is because our work is project-based instead of test-based. More often than not, this means that instead of taking midterms and final exams, we have to build models and complete drawings throughout the semester. Despite the hard work, however, it can be a tremendously gratifying experience seeing a project come to life. If you find yourself passionate about your work, then it can be pleasantly surprising how fast time flies by. In those hours at studio, you’ll find yourself creating some great friendships with your studio mates too. There are lots of fun memories to be had there.

Back to deciding if this is for you. If design building or interior interest you, then architecture is for you. If you like solving problems without all the crazy math, architecture is for you. If you like being creative and functional at the same time, then architecture is for you. And if you are still not sure always feel free to try one of the exercises, or reach out to us!
